Open Your Hotel Room With Your Apple Watch!!!

Open Your Hotel Room With Your Apple Watch!!!
Starwood & Hilton Hotels Announce Virtual Room Keys

A few weeks ago, I reported on potentially being able to open and start your Tesla car with an iPhone. Recently, Starwood hotels announced they launched their SPG Keyless hotel room lock service that will allow Apple Watches, and bluetooth LE equipped iPhone models to unlock their hotel room doors. All iPhones beginning with the iPhone 4s Model, moving forward will function to unlock the hotel room door locks. So just to be clear, the system does NOT use NFC.

The coolest features, is hotel guests will be able to check-in and check-out from their Apple Watch or iPhone, thus allowing them to bypass the front desk all-together!!! Hilton Worldwide also recently announced they will also be introducing their own bluetooth based smart key system that can run on Apple and Android based smartphones. A Hilton representative recently said "Never before has a hotel guest been able to check-in, select their room from a digital floor plan, request items to be ready upon arrival, and then access their room via their smartphone and find it exactly the way they requested it. We’re truly revolutionizing travel by making the stay experience more convenient."

Jony Ive
Wins SFMOMA Lifetime Achievement Award
Offers Apple Watch Design Insight

Apple lead designer, Jonathan Ive attended a special event in his honor at the San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art (SFMOMA) this evening. He was awarded the 2014 Bay Area Treasure Award which is a lifetime achievement award.

At the event Jonathan Ive spoke about the upcoming Apple Watch and he said: "I believe with every bone in my body, that that forthcoming Apple Watch will help establish a new category of computing device." He went on to say "Even though Apple Watch does so many things, there are cultural, historical implications and expectations. That's why it's been such a difficult and humbling program."

Ive continued: "Obviously, you're not going to read 'War and Peace' on your wrist. But for lightweight interactions, for casual glancing, it's absolutely fabulous. And I think this is the beginning of a very important category. With every bone in my body I know this is an important category, and this is the right place to wear it."

"Designing the smart watch posed more challenges than the iPhone."
–Jonathan Ive

The SFMOMA director, Neal Benezra (pictured below at this evenings event with Jonathan Ive) issued a statement regarding Jonathan Ive and said:

“Ive is our generation’s most innovative and influential figure in the field of industrial design—no other design mind has done more to transform the way we visualize and share information. SFMOMA was the first museum on the West Coast to establish a department of architecture and design, and we’re thrilled to celebrate Ive’s revolutionary achievements.”

Will You Be Able To Open & Start Cars With An Apple Watch?

Want To Open & Start Cars With An Apple Watch?
The Tesla Model S 6.0 App Suggests Possibility

On September 11, 2014 Tesla introduced a software update to its iOS Application that remarkably allows users to lock and unlock their Tesla S Doors with their iPhone, as well as being able to start the Tesla up. This begs the question of wether an Apple Watch would be able to do the same thing? In the video below we see a demonstration of the Android version of the App, which is doing just that. Thus, one could extrapolate, the Apple Watch should be able to do the same thing. Particularly based upon the fact that Apple recently announced their WatchKit SDK.

Apple Watch & The iPhone 6

Apple Watch & The iPhone 6

I am working on an big article/review of the iPhone 6 Plus, which is extremely profound in its implications. This article will not only offer a number of interesting insights on the iPhone 6 Plus, but also offer some perspective on how it might interact with the the Apple Watch.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Shows Off The iPhone 6 Plus & Apple Watch Together For The First Time

In case you missed the Apple September 2014 event where Apple CEO, Tim Cook introduced the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and the Apple Watch, as well as intruding Apple Pay, I highly recommend watch it, as seen below. If you want to learn even more and gain valuable insight from Tim Cook, I also highly recommend checking out his interview on Charlie Rose. Also Bloomberg Business wrote a great profile recently on Tim Cook, which covers his achievements at Apple, including the launch of the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch, which I also recommend.

Like Peanut Butter & Jelly

The iPhone 6 and Apple Watch go together perfectly, like chocolate and peanut butter, or guacamole and chips. One of the most fascinating UI Design elements is that the Apple Watch has round icons instead of square, like iOS has. This not only creates a brilliant contrast, but aids in making the screen on the Apple watch seem less cluttered, and it kind of reminds me, speaking of food metaphors, of a bunch of Skittles, or M&M's layed out on a table.

The Dynamic Duo

So how exactly will the Apple Watch initially work with and depend on an iPhone? What will the relationship be between the two? Apple already mentioned that using a Apple Watch will require being setup with an iPhone.

The photo above shows an iPhone application designed to show the users health progress over time, on the iPhone screen. In other words, the iPhone App allows the user to see an "at-a-glance" perspective on their days, weeks and months.

This helps to make certain you get enough exercise, and it even allows you to share your activity and workout data with other third-party fitness and health apps.

Apple's international appeal is unrivaled, as we see below on the cover of the November 2014 Cover of Vogue China, which is scheduled to come this next Monday. The cover features, Liu Wen, rockin' a 38MM Apple Watch. The fact that Apple chose to have the Apple Watch make it's editorial debut on the cover of a Chinese magazine, really demonstrates we are living in a global village.

Apple is on fire in China today, and as an example, the Apple iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus is already a megabit best-seller in China...

Customized Apple Watches Present More Questions Than Answers

Customized Apple Watches
Present More Questions Than Answers

So what are the REAL RAMIFICATIONS of Apple entering into the watch market? The truth is that nobody, not even Apple really knows, but we know about Apples determination and extreme resources  coupled with Jonathan Ive's design prowess, and this makes this a fascinating time in watch history (pun intended).

One of the obvious unanswered questions, is wether Apple intends to collaborate or partner with other watch brands? Even if they decide to go it alone, there is a very high likelihood aftermarket companies with seek to offer customized and bejeweled versions of bespoke Apple Watches such as the ones pictured below. As a matter of fact, as an example, the bespoke aftermarket is one that has flourished for the past decade for companies who customize Rolex watches.

So how does Rolex feel about companies that purchase new Rolex watches, customize them, and offer them for resale? I don't know, but my best guess is they probably don't know what to make of it. On the one hand, it helps them sell more watches, which they can't really service or warrant any more, and on the other hand, they may feel like it dilutes their brand, or they may be frustrated since they don't control them. So how will Apple feel when this inevitably happens? Once again, hard to say.

I recently published a story which gave an overview of an extremely detailed story Arial Adams' published about Apple watches on his blog named ABlogToWatch.com. Ariel is friend of mine, and I have not had a chance to speak with him yet about the impact of the Apple watch, but it appears he is as fascinated with its value proposition like I am. Today, Ariel Adams published a story named "Wondering How The Swiss Luxury Industry Will Handle Smartwatches? One Cheeky Watch Maker Proposes This Option."

Ariel's story showcases the fascinating renderings of customized Bejeweled Apple Watches seen above in this story, and they were created by a designer named Yvan Arpa, who is considering offering such a product to his customers.

Just to give you a little bit of background on my relationship with Ariel Adams. Ariel used to live in San Francisco, where I have lived my whole life. Years ago, Ariel invited me to be a guest on his Hourtime Podcast he does with John Biggs. He invited me to discuss Rolex history, and it was fascinating. This was before He really developed a real appreciation for Rolex. Just for the record, I bought my first Rolex more than thirty years ago, when I was sixteen and suffice it to day, I have been a Rolex fanatic ever since.

Jake Ehrlich, James Dowling, Benjamin Clymer, and Ariel Adams on November 18, 2013
At Rolex World Headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland
(RolexMagazine.com, Timezone.com, Hodinkee.com, and ABlogToWatch.com)

Ariel Adams and I are brother's of sorts, along with Benjamin Clymer, who is the founder, and Editor and Publisher of Hodinkee.com. Benjamin Clymer from Hodinkee is also very impressed with the all-new Apple Watch.

I say we we are like brothers of sorts since we all roughly started our online blog/magazines around the same time back in 2008. I also met Benjamin Clymer soon after he started Hodinkee.com. The three of us have much in common, as we were really the first major horological bloggers on the web.

Last year, Rolex invited the three of us to Geneva, Switzerland to tour all four Rolex facilities, along with Rolex book author, James Dowling, who was also a founder of TimeZone.com.

Rolex's invitation was unprecedented in the sense they never invited online horological journalists to tour all four of their facilities. To the best of my knowledge, it was the first time they invited any journalist to tour all four of their facilities. As a result, I wrote a super-detailed story about the amazing experience we had touring Rolex in Switzerland.

When Worlds Collide

So what does this have to do with anything? The three of us are all fascinated with the value proposition of the Apple Watch, and we are all tripping on the reaction of the Swiss Watch industry. I have written extensively about my thoughts on this subject on Jake's Rolex World. In all my detailed articles I wrote on the subject, I argued that the Swiss Watch Industry, and everything it stands for is about to be very seriously challenged by Apple.

There have been many naysayers saying I am overblowing or exaturating the reality of the situation and that the status quo will continue unaffected. I don't believe this for one moment. I argue the renderings in this story from Ariel's article are more proof-positve of the mounting evidence that the Apple Watch changes everything...and of course, that is why I started Jake's Apple Watch World!!!

In the months and years to come, it will be fascinating to see how things play themselves out...As they say, "Time Will Tell."

On a sidenote, and speaking of customization, the irony is that the Apple Watch is meant to be extremely customizable. So what did I do with the image below? I took the photo of Yvan Arpa's customized and blinged-out Apple Watch, and customized the watch dial with Mickey Mouse, which I think looks cool...and that is the point...the future is about freedom of expression...

P.S. If you think about it, the watch above could almost be a blinged-out Rolex Prince, all it would need is the Rolex crown on the Apple Digital Crown...

Super Detailed Apple Watch Review from Ariel Adams @ ABlogToWatch.com

Super Detailed Apple Watch Review
from Ariel Adams @ ABlogToWatch.com

"The Apple Watch is going to be a force to be reckoned with." –Ariel Adams

My pal, Ariel Adams just published the most comprehensive article to date on the Apple Watch, and it is a superb read, which sheds much light and insight on the ethos of the Apple Watch. I highly recommend reading Ariels detailed article on the Apple.

"Apple indicated to me that you don't need to take your phone around with you while you exercise, unless you require GPS functions. The Apple Watch can store some media, such as songs, independently on the device (the internal storage of the Apple Watch has yet to be announced), and it can track a lot of exercise and movement data without being connected to an iPhone. Once paired again, the Apple Watch shares data with the host apps on the phone. This answers a lot of questions people had about whether or not the Apple Watch would be able to live apart from its host iPhone device." –Ariel Adams: A Blog To Watch.

"A legitimate debate exists over whether the Apple Watch is merely a fun second screen for one's phone, or a new extension of mobile technology that will soon be as indispensable as having a phone. I don't know the answer, but I do know that if smartwatches are able to negate the need to carry around a physical wallet, then consumers will have a huge incentive to use them." –Ariel Adams: A Blog To Watch.

Apple Watch Memory Capacity Specs

Apple Watch Memory Capacity Specs
4GB & 8GB Versions?

According to Appleinsider.com, the Apple watch may come in a 4GB and 8GB versions, with 512 megabytes of RAM. This strategy actually makes a lot of sense, especially for customers who want to run with their Apple Watch while listening to music though their Bluetooth wireless headset.

It is so fascinating when you think about it, that the Apple Watch is really a supercomputer on your wrist. It seriously make me wonder what Apple Watches will be like in 5 years!!!
